How to Choose a Tradie Without Getting Mucked Around

Hiring a tradie shouldn’t be a guessing game. Here’s a practical way to find someone reliable, local, and easy to deal with.

Hiring a tradie should be straightforward.

Usually, it isn’t.

You do a search. You open a few tabs. You call one number and get no answer. You message another and hear nothing back. Then someone finally responds, but the whole thing already feels vague.

That’s where people get stuck.

Because most homeowners are not trying to become experts in plumbing, electrical work, carpentry, or bathroom renovations. They just want to find someone decent, local, and reliable.

So here’s a simpler way to approach it.

Start with the basics

Before you get too deep into comparing businesses, check the obvious stuff first:

  • do they clearly say what they do?
  • do they service your area?
  • is there a working phone number or contact method?
  • does the business look active?
  • are there photos, reviews, or signs of recent work?

This doesn’t guarantee quality. But it does help you avoid wasting time on businesses that look half-finished or hard to deal with.

Look for clarity, not just polish

A lot of people get distracted by presentation.

A slick logo or polished branding can help, sure. But what matters more is whether the business makes things easy to understand.

Can you quickly work out:

  • what they do
  • where they work
  • what kinds of jobs they take on
  • how to contact them
  • what the next step is

If that basic information is hard to find, that’s usually not a great sign.

Read reviews like a normal person

You don’t need to spend an hour combing through every review.

You’re just looking for patterns.

Things like:

  • did they show up?
  • did they communicate properly?
  • did the work seem tidy and well handled?
  • did the quote and final job line up?

You are not looking for perfection. You are looking for signs that this is a real business with a decent track record.

Check whether they suit your job

Not every tradie is the right fit for every job.

Some focus on emergency work.
Some do bigger renovations.
Some are ideal for maintenance and smaller repairs.
Some mainly work in a few specific suburbs.

So before you get too far down the road, check whether they actually seem suited to what you need.

This sounds simple, but it saves a lot of back-and-forth.

Don’t treat the cheapest quote like the winner by default

A cheaper quote might be great. It might also leave things out, create confusion later, or reflect weaker communication from the start.

The cheapest price is not always the best value.

The better question is:

Do I understand what I’m getting, and do I trust this person to follow through?

Final thought

The goal is not to find the flashiest tradie.

It’s to find someone who:

  • does the kind of work you need
  • services your area
  • communicates clearly
  • feels reliable enough to book

That’s usually what people mean when they say they want a “good tradie.”
